I am just trying to imagine what would have gone through the minds of people who lived there. I am sure almost everyone of them would have seen death as a better alternative than to live such a pitiable condition. Thanks Suresh.

In response to:Pope and Outsourcing

Philippines, as well, is a catholic country. Suresh, here is an excerpt from today's Deccan Chronicle that pre-empts the so called rural torch bearere from baiting IT majors.

IT, ITeS companies beat path to rural India

Hyderabad, Feb. 17: After transforming the lifestyle of people in the cities, IT companies are trying to change the economic landscape of the country’s hinterlands. Satyam Computer Services has charted out plans to expand its rural BPO GramIT to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas. Apart from Satyam, Lason and Datamation have set up their business process outsourcing centres in remote places.

The Hyderabad-based IT major, which has set up its first rural BPO at Jalli Kakinda in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh in August 2005, is currently running three GramIT centres in the East and West Godavari districts under the aegis of its NGO arm Byrraju Foundation. It has plans to open 10 more by the year-end.

"GramIT is currently dealing with 15 to 18 key processes, including help desk of Satyam Computers. It also serves other corporates and the Andhra Pradesh government. The Ethakota centre is totally dedicated to Tata BPO," said Mr Vergese Jacob, chief integrator and lead partner, Byrraju Foundation. He said the rural BPO is also planning offer services to international clients in the near future.

Observing that rural BPO has changed the lives of people in the surrounding villages, Mr Vergese said the foundation is willing to help others to set up such centres in other villages. Lason has launched centres in Kizhanur in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu and at Jindal township in Bellary, Karnataka. Datamation plans to open another 15, some of which could be in semi-urban and rural areas.

According to Mr Srinivas, in-charge of Jalli Kakinda centre, "The emergence of a relatively higher income group — the BPO employees who are paid between Rs 4,000 and Rs 6,000 — has kicked off the development process in the village. A year ago, the village got its first hotel and real estate prices and house rent shot up." Villagers, who had to walk about 2 km for a bus, started enjoying the ‘luxury’ of travelling in autorickshaws.

GramIT centre provides employment to the youth, who are then trained for three months in keyboard skills and English. "Operating costs are 50 per cent less in the rural centres compared to the urban BPOs. By outsourcing to GramIT, our clients can save 25 per cent to 40 per cent of their costs," Mr Vergese said.

Suresh
It's good that you decided to blog rather than slog with the so called neighborhood friendly newspapers to vent out your frustrations.

Prima facie what struck me immediately on skimming thru your blog was that most of us would have felt the same way under similar circumsatances. But under the guise of paucity of time or a cynically contemptuous disbelief of the system to set it right even if point it out we keep mum.
