Language affinity, nay fanaticism, is a bane of India apart from casteism. And the politicians fan it every now and then to retain support of their constituency. Right from the 1960's this is going on. And one cannot guess to which lows these will climb down in their blind support for a language.

There was a full page advertisement of the Hydro Electricity Board of Uttarakhand eulogising the performance of the board under the new CM. This was in The Hindu which is predominantly a South Indian paper. Guess what was the language. Hindi. The state government of Uttarakhand would have spent a few lakhs at least for this. And they just understand that 99% of the readers would have skipped this advertisment. Only the newspaper owner will be laughing his way to the bank.

We do not treat language a medium of communication, make one person understand the other. We attach pride, prestige, our honour and the lives of the party workers.
