I read two quotes on taxation. "It is a democratic theft" - Anonymous and "Taxation is the price we pay for civilization" - O W Holmes - US Supreme Cour Judge
Both statements are true, in the Indian context in particular and globally almost. It is a price we pay for having order in the society, creating and maintaining infrastructure, working as a security net for the vulnerable and expxloited in the society and for infusing confidence in the countries to come and transact with us. This sustains the image of the country and gives it an entity.
True. But the same money is swindled by politicians and officials while executing the various projects. It helps these people amass wealth in an illegal manner. As Rajiv Gandhi once said that only 5% of the project monies reached the public. (I am not sure of the %). If this were true, then it would be enough if we are taxed at a prime rate of 10% and not 30% and indirect taxation can be brought down drastically provided the money looted by the corrupt were brought back to book. In that sense, it becomes a theft at least partially.
Any takers for this view?
